River Puzzle Thing

The following link was emailed around work the other week. It's apparently used as an IQ test for job applicants in Japan.

The rules are:
- The father cannot be left with the daughters unless the mother is present.
- The mother cannot be left alone with the sons unless the father is present.
- The thief cannot be left with any of the family members unless the police chap is present
- Only the father, mother, and police chap can operate the raft
It is possible, but takes a bit of working out. Good luck! :)

This sounds strickingly similar to the puzzle of the farmer with the wolf and the sheep. The sheep and the wolf can't be left alone together or the wolf will eat the sheep, only so many creatures can be carried across at once. A simple version of this by the sounds of it. :-)

That was infuriating. It took me a good 20 minutes or something to figure out. I had one particularly dark moment when I had one boy left and couldn't see how to move him :(

I was most shocked by the fact that the polis didn't arrest the father or mother for the fact that they obviously got up to some unsavoury business when left alone with their children. Sickos.
